CHILLIDA Edouardo

(1924 – 2002)

Spanish Basque painter, engraver and sculptor. At the beginning of his career, he turned to architecture, then decided to devote himself to painting and sculpture. He used natural materials: wood, rock, iron, and also concrete. He is nicknamed the “blacksmith”.
His abstract vision comes from his meeting with the well-known artists Brancusi and Tapiès. He placed his work in the environment. He wanted to go back to the origins of nature. He transformed materials into artworks and placed them in a natural context. Chilida is very appreciated by the Basque community.
