BUFFET Bernard

(1928 – 1998)

French painter, lithographer and draftsman, he is best known for his work on specific themes. The “chosen theme” is declined through different subjects, therefore we are discovering the world of circus, Christianity, Brittany, clowns, Paris, Jules Verne, animals, St Tropez, etc.

His uniqueness comes from his style, in contrast to the abstract art which dominated the 50s. It seems that his work reflects the sadness of his childhood and the loss of his mother, which constantly forces him to reinvent himself.

He was quickly recognized in Japan, which saw in him a form of “calligraphy revival”. In France, he was recognized by the general public and became in the 60s the most expensive painter in the world (Galerie Maurice Garnier).
