ALECHINSKY Pierre

(1927-)

In 1945, Alechinsky discovered the work of Michaux, Dubuffet, and the Surrealists, and became friends with art critic Jacques Putman. His first individual exhibition was organized in 1947. He met Dotremont in 1949 and joined the Cobra movement that same year (Asger Jorn, Karel Appel); he became one of its most active members until the Cobra group disbanded in 1951. Alechinsky takes part in the first international Cobra exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1954, he meets the Chinese painter Wallace Ting, who plays an important role in the development of his work.
