Akira KITO

Akira Kito, born in 1925 in Tokyo, is part of a lineage of Japanese artists who have left their stamp on contemporary art. At the age of 16, influenced by his artistic family background, he took up painting, showing early talent.

In 1953, after enriching his experience as a teacher in Japan, he decided to adventure beyond the borders of his native country. It was in France, at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, that he discovered and mastered the techniques of Cubism, an artistic revolution that would profoundly shape his work.

Akira Kito’s art is characterized by three distinct phases, each reflecting his stylistic evolution and his relentless quest for expression. The Humoristic Period (1955–58) reveals his ability to juggle the nuances of humor in his paintings. Next came the symbolic period (1958–59), during which he explored the depths of symbolism, infusing his works with narrative and conceptual richness. Finally, beginning in 1959, he fully embraced abstraction, a realm in which his art achieved remarkable maturity and depth.
